Vision
Statement
The CIC Center for Library Initiatives (CLI), established in 1994, functions as a cohesive consortial organization guided by a vision of the information resources and services of the CIC as a seamless whole.
Strategic Directions
·
Initiate collaborative digital library activities
aimed at increasing access to digital content for all CIC faculty, staff, and
students
·
Implement a joint university press/library
collaboration to provide CIC-wide access to electronic books published by our
universities
·
Assess tools and infrastructure for the VEL (such
as the user interface and request system), adjusting, acquiring
or developing, and deploying new tools and software as appropriate
·
Assess the use and value of the VEL to end-users
and library staff, and adjust the services accordingly
·
Initiate experiments to deliver e-content and
non-returnable loans to the desktops or portable computing devices of end users
·
Negotiate and administer consortial licenses,
contracts, and agreements for content, software, and services that advance the
missions of the CIC member libraries and the VEL
·
Encourage expansion of ETD (electronic theses and
dissertations) programs.
·
Explore communication and management tools to
support cooperative reference services.
·
Participate in developing metadata standards and
harvesting services to facilitate access to CIC resources.
·
Encourage consortial development of digitization
projects that will expand access to and/or preserve coordinated bodies of
materials held in non-electronic formats in CIC libraries.
·
Pursue external funding opportunities in support of
the CIC strategic directions and other opportunities that may arise
·
Coordinate grant-funded preservation activities, as
appropriate, such as preservation through microfilming, digital technologies, or
other media
·
Help CIC member libraries attract, recruit, and
retain a diverse workforce that addresses demographic changes and skill sets
needed for information delivery in the 21st century.
The
CIC CLI will continue to pursue the vision of the VEL as seamless online access
to the wealth of information resources and services available through CIC member
libraries.
Organization
The
members of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation—the Chief Academic
Officers (Provosts)—provide the overall funding and strategic directions for
the CIC and the CIC CLI. The CIC Library Directors meet regularly to
establish specific initiatives, review reports from various CIC CLI committees,
task forces, and working groups, act on recommendations from those groups, and
exchange information and ideas with one another.
The
primary objective of the Director of the CIC CLI is to facilitate communication
and action among the various groups in order to accomplish the strategic
directions set forth by the Chief Academic Officers and the Library Directors.
In addition, the Director of the CIC CLI monitors the activities of all
CIC library-related groups, other CIC groups, programs, and initiatives as
appropriate (e.g., Press Directors and Archivists), and other national and
international initiatives that may affect CIC initiatives. The Director of the
CIC CLI is assisted in these efforts by staff at the CIC headquarters.
